QR codes on flyers and posters

Last updated:

Make the code big enough for the distance, put it where eyes land, and tell people what they get when they scan. Then test one print before you make the rest.

Pick the right size

Think about how far away people will be.

  • Flyer in the hand: 3 to 5 cm wide is plenty.
  • Poster on a notice board: at least 8 to 10 cm.
  • Poster across a room or in a window: use the 10 to 1 rule. Code width is about one tenth of the scan distance.

Put it in the right place

  • Place it next to the main message, so people see it right when they decide to act.
  • Keep it at eye height on posters. People will not crouch or stretch to scan.
  • Leave a white margin all around. Do not let photos, text or folds touch it.
  • Do not put it across a fold on a folded flyer.

Tell people what they get

A code with no words around it gets fewer scans. Add a short line:

  • “Scan to book a table”
  • “Scan for the full timetable”
  • “Scan to get 10% off” (only if the offer is real)

Also print the plain web address. Some people prefer to type it.

  • Use a short link. Shorter links make simpler codes.
  • Send people to a page that works well on a phone.
  • Point the code at a page you can update, like yoursite.com/event. Then you can change the details later without reprinting.

Think about the place

  • Outdoors: use a matte or laminated finish that does not glare. Rain and sun can fade ink.
  • Dark places: use a bigger code and strong contrast.
  • Windows: glass reflects. Test from where people will stand.

For events

You can make a code that adds your event to people’s calendars. Or link to a sign-up form or ticket page.

Test before you print many

Print one copy at full size. Scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone from the real distance. Check that the page loads fast on mobile data. Then print the rest.

Make your code

QRVivid is free, with no sign-up. Your code is made on your device, and the link goes straight into the code, so it never expires.
