Are QR codes free?

Last updated:

Yes. QR codes are free to make and free to use. You only pay if you pick a service that runs your code through its own server, like a dynamic code with scan tracking.

No one owns QR codes

The QR code was invented by Denso Wave, a Japanese company, in 1994. Denso Wave holds a patent on it but chose not to enforce it, so anyone can make and use QR codes. You do not need a licence. “QR Code” is a registered trademark of Denso Wave.

Why do some websites charge?

There are two common reasons.

1. Dynamic codes. Some services put their own short link inside your code. Every scan goes through their server. That costs them money, so they charge a monthly fee. If you stop paying, the short link can stop, and so does your printed code.

2. Extra tools. Some services sell scan counts, team accounts, or bulk codes. These can be useful for big companies. Most people do not need them.

Watch out for “free trial” codes

Some sites let you make a code for free, then switch it off after a trial. The code still looks fine. But scanning it shows a “deactivated” page. This is why people think codes expire.

Before you print, scan your new code. If the link that shows up is your own link, you are safe. If it is the company’s link, read their terms first. See Do QR codes expire?

Free codes can still look good

You do not need to pay to change colours, add a logo or put a photo in the code. QRVivid does all of that for free.

How QRVivid stays free

QRVivid has no paid plans and no account. The site is paid for by ads on the page. Your codes are made on your own device, so we do not pay for a server for each scan. That is why we can keep it free, and why your codes never stop.

What you might pay for

  • Printing. Cards, flyers and stickers cost money, of course.
  • A website. If your code opens your own site, you pay for the site, not the code.
  • Scan counting. If you truly need it, a dynamic code service will charge. There is a free alternative: use your website’s visitor stats. See Static vs dynamic QR codes.

Make your code

QRVivid is free, with no sign-up. Your code is made on your device, and the link goes straight into the code, so it never expires.
