What a WhatsApp QR code does
A WhatsApp QR code opens a WhatsApp chat with you. If you add a message, it is already typed in the chat box. The person presses Send and you are talking.
It is a simple way to:
- Take orders and bookings for cafés, salons and small shops.
- Offer support on a product box or receipt.
- Answer questions about a property, a car for sale or an event.
- Let people join a waiting list at a busy counter.
How to make one
- Choose WhatsApp at the top.
- Type your WhatsApp number with the country code.
- Add an opening message, for example “Hi! I would like to order…”.
- Check for the green Scans well note, then download.
The code holds a wa.me link, which is WhatsApp’s own link for starting a chat. It works on iPhone, Android and computers.
Tips
- Write the first message for them. “Hi, I saw your poster and want a quote” tells you where the customer came from.
- Set up quick replies or an away message in WhatsApp Business, so people get an answer even when you are busy.
- Say when you reply, for example “We reply 9am–6pm”.
- Use a photo code with your logo or shop front on posters and stickers. It looks friendly and still scans.
Common mistakes
- Missing country code. WhatsApp needs the full international number. A local number like 9123 4567 will not open the right chat.
- Using a personal number for a business. Customers will message at all hours. A WhatsApp Business number lets you set hours, labels and quick replies.
- A message that is too long. Keep the opening line short so people do not need to scroll before they press Send.
- Not saying it is WhatsApp. Put the WhatsApp name or icon next to the code, so people know which app will open.
Example uses
A hair salon puts a WhatsApp code on its window with the message “Hi, I would like to book a cut for …”. People walking past at night scan it, send the message, and get a booking the next morning, without calling during opening hours.
Where to put it
Shop windows and doors, delivery bags, receipts, flyers, product labels and the back of a business card all work well. Wherever people might think “I have a quick question”, a WhatsApp code saves them looking up your number.
Questions people ask
Do people need to save my number first?
No. The code opens a chat with you straight away, without adding you to their contacts.
What number format should I use?
Use the full international number with the country code, such as +852 9123 4567. We remove the + and spaces, which is the format WhatsApp needs.
Does it work with WhatsApp Business?
Yes. Use the number of your WhatsApp Business account.
What if the person does not have WhatsApp?
The link opens a WhatsApp web page that asks them to install the app or use WhatsApp Web.
Is the message sent automatically?
No. The message is typed into the chat box. The person can change it, and must press Send.
